Shou Hei Kun is the current Head of Military Affairs for the state of Qin, the Chancellor of the Right of Qin, and the leader of the Shou Hei Kun Army.
He is considered to be the best Strategist within Qin and is recognized as one of the best in China. Due to his capacity and importance as the Chief of Qin Military Affairs, he is responsible for approving and teaching students in the Strategist Academy, where he instructed his nephews Mou Ten, Mou Ki, and Ka Ryo Ten in the ways of strategical warfare.
Appearance[]
Shou Hei Kun is always seen in oversized robes in the court. On the battlefield, he wears a dark armor ornamented with snakes. He has long, shiny hair, always seen tied in a high ponytail, and a short goatee. His eyes have a sharpness that keeps him looking pensive, and his expression near never changes. At times of stress, he grows a light goatee and facial stubble that he shaves by his next appearance. Yasuhisa Hara describes him as extremely handsome as seen in his stats below.
Personality[]
As a military strategist, Shou Hei Kun is a calm and well-considered man. Even his dominating best friend and sworn brother, Mou Bu has a lot of respect towards him. And he can also spot impressive talent, as he wanted Shin to be his associate due to his budding and exceptional potential on the battlefield. He has a discerning eye and is capable of gleaning more information from unguarded opponents than they let on.
He has his own specific goals and distances himself from his benefactor Ryo Fui and his follower's more distasteful actions. He is usually stoic and is rarely seen smiling or showing any emotions. He keeps his brows furrowed so much that most people are unable to distinguish his thoughtful face from his normal one. He is loyal to his work no matter who he works for.
History[]
It was noted that Shou Hei Kun originates from the state of Chu, thou the details of this still remain unknown. He and Mou Bu have been good friends since their childhood. In his youth, he studied military arts and tactical, strategical warfare under Ko Shou, the only pure strategist of the Six Great Generals's first generation and at some point, in the early days of his career, he was one of the first talented people to be recruited by Ryo Fui and eventually became a member of the Four Pillars of Ryo Fui.
Story[]
Assassination Plot Arc[]
Kyou Kai remarks that she was invited to be his retainer. He arrives with the Ryo Fui faction and seems for the most part indifferent to the clash of characters until Sai Taku implies that he is stronger than Mou Bu. He dismisses this as a preposterous joke. He is aware of Shin's presence in the court and his identity although he does not indicate this just then.
Training Arc[]
When Ka Ryo Ten arrives at his mansion, he notes her panic and concludes that she was initially oblivious to where she was brought. When Kyou Kai's threatening letter is read out, he is indifferent until the letter mentions Ka Ryo Ten's name. He realizes that she is the one and the same girl who is close to Ei Sei and helped Sei during the rebellion. He accepts her into his school, much to his retainers' astonishment.
He explains all this to Sai Taku and says that he has obtained a useful pawn and an insider from the King's faction. Although he seemed to be uncomfortable with Sai Taku's ulterior motives, he also remarks that Kyou Kai meant for this to happen. He also says that he wants to obtain Kyou Kai and Shin (most of all) for his own use.
Battle of Bayou Arc[]
He is consulted by Ryo Fui on whether they should continue their incursion into Han lands which he approves on the condition that Chou Tou is sent to oversee their southern borders.
When Mou Bu was about to be appointed a commander in chief against the invading Zhao army he withholds his reservations. Shou Bun Kun, however, voices his own but when he is approached by an enraged Mou Bu, Shou Hei Kun stops him and asks Shou Bun Kun's opinion. General Ou Ki arrives and Shou Hei Kun informs Mou Bu that he was the one who called the great general so that they could make him commander in chief. He also decides unilaterally, overriding Mou Bu's objections, as chief of military affairs to appoint Ou Ki over Mou Bu. When Ou Ki throws them all out of the court to speak with the king, he eyes Shin who had arrived with Ou Ki but stops when Shin gets hit for glaring back.
Later, he listens to Shou Bun Kun's memories of Hou Ken and voices his opinions. He is very disturbed when he learns of Ou Ki's death and their defeat.
Alliance Arc[]
On arrival in Kanyou, Shin and Kyou Kai are welcomed by Shou Hei Kun himself. Shin asks why Ryo Fui arranged the meeting as he starts to think it’s for killing Riboku. Shou Hei Kun says he does not know and gives Shin and Kyou Kai the order to dress as guards and strike down Riboku on his command. Shin refuses, saying it would disgrace Ou Ki’s expectations of him. Shou Hei Kun then says that others are less objected to the thought of killing Riboku. At that moment Mou Bu, Tou, and Ou Ki’s vassals pass them. Shou Hei Kun then says he only invited Shin in consideration of him receiving Ou Ki’s glaive so he should give up his childish sentiments. Shou Hei Kun continuous to explain that the nature of this meeting can be considered a war in itself. When Ri Boku proposes the alliance during the meeting Shou Hei Kun thinks it's not a bad idea, since Qin should focus their resources on fighting Wei and Han.
Sanyou Campaign Arc[]
He seizes the opportunity afforded by the alliance with Zhao to launch an attack on the stronghold of Sanyou. He makes allowances for the possible appearance of Ren Pa and sends Mou Bu to warn Mou Gou of his opponent. When Shou Bun Kun warns him of how fearsome Ren Pa can be, he says that he cannot afford to send reinforcements and draws everyone's attention to the possible Chu attack. Later, he is seen at the rewards ceremony announcing the rewards.
Sanyou Aftermath Arc[]
Appearing at Sanyou along with Ri Shi, Shou Hei Kun announces that the region of Sanyou will now be called "Tougun" and 10,000 Qin citizens will be immigrated there to occupy the land. Telling the troops that Tougun is now part of Qin soil, he states that it must be protected at all costs. Shou Hei Kun is later promoted to the position of Chancellor of the Right in the Qin court.
Coalition Invasion Arc[]
Upon hearing of the invasion by the Chu, Shou Hei Kun points out the cunning behind Chu's advance as it bypasses Generals Mou Bu and Chou Tou, comparing their presence to a "poison" which would spread if left unchecked. When news of Sai Taku's success in Qi reached the royal palace, he mentions that the threat of Qi behind the allied states will make them uneasy and the issue of the Wei army that had penetrated the deepest into Qin lands. After running various counter scenarios with other strategists, Shou Hei Kun is seen visibly exhausted as he states that Qin has a "one in five" chance of surviving the coming army.
Upon gathering Qin's Great General class Generals to the capital, Shou Hei Kun then explained the strategy he had in mind. He explained that with Qin's current military resources, they did not have the slightest chance of stopping the coalition army's invasion. Hence, they would abolish all the various defense lines that they had set up between the coalition army and Kanyou. The key focus was on having all their citizens and soldiers to pull back to their respective cities and allow the coalition army to pass through uncontested to reach the national gate of Kankoku Pass. Meeting separately with Mou Bu, he remarks on the change within the great general due to Ou Ki's death and speaks on how recent events took the state by surprise. Later, during Mou Bu's fight with Kan Mei, the former remembers Shou Hei Kun's statement that he believed Mou Bu to be stronger than the latter. This inspires him to get up again after being beaten down.
He is later seen impressed with Mou Bu's tenacity when messengers inform the court of his victory and share a rare smile and handshake with his fellow chancellor Shou Bun Kun.
Later, he hears of Ri Boku's invasion of the southern passage and after an initial moment of wavering commands the city gates to be locked down and to prepare to fight. He despairs of the lack of time to make preparations and also states that Kanyou does not have the strength to repel Ri Boku implying that as long as there was infighting among the factions, they could not hope to repel the Ri Boku Army. Later, as he is by his aides making last-minute plans, he is approached by Ei Sei for tactical advice. When Sei reveals his intentions to use the civilians at Sai and stops the army thereby inspiring the people himself, he is moved and sends aid in the form of several of his vassals with commanding experience to the city of Sai.
When he was approached by Ryo Fui who threateningly asked him if he went to the King's aid, he stands his ground and replies that he feels most responsible towards his position as the chief of military affairs at the moment.
After their overall, victory he commands Mou Bu to attack the Coalition Army from the rear so that Qi would be spared from their wrath. He personally commends and thanks to him at the rewards ceremony.
Conspiracy in the Court Arc[]
He is seen in court debating the Zhao invasion in the north near Tonryu. He seems to be rather suspicious of Ryo Fui's enthusiastic suggestions.
State of Ai Arc[]
During the court meeting the king asks him about the security of Sanyou and Chiyoyou regions. Shou Hei Kun says that it's unlikely that Wei will make a move now, since they don't have resources, however they should warry against Zhao and Ri Boku. He says he already dispatched his vassal Kai Oku in order to quell any unrest in the army and sniff potential plots. He also asks Ri Shi to investigate deeper by using his spies. Around ten days before the events of the Coming of Age Ceremony, he sent a coded message to his pupil Ka Ryo Ten, warning her about the events that will transpire at the ceremony. When Chu invades Qin's borders, he recognizes that this is linked to Taigen's declaration of independence and says that if all other states will recognize Taigen, then it will truly become the eight states in China "Ai".
At Kinen Temple, he publicly announced that he wished to part ways from Ryo Faction and join the Ei Sei Faction to everyone present's astonishment. Him and Kai Oku then personally join the battle. He then has a conversation with Shou Bun Kun who thanks him for joining their cause and apologizes for doubting him. They then discuss the current state of affairs. They then ride at the front of 1000 cavalry into the enemy's army and perform a tactical maneuver known as Hourai, that involves creating walls of soldiers to the left, right, and rear of the enemy commander, so as to entrap the enemy commander, Duke of Juuteki. This enables him to face Wa Tegi in a duel and swiftly behead him.
After the battle ended Shou Hei Kun assures that this is the end of Ryo Fui. Shin asks him why he betrayed Ryo Fui in the first place, and he answers that it's because he also dreams of unifying China and thinks that the current king is someone capable of doing that. Shin thanks him for saving them and says he is looking forward to work with him.
Koku You Campaign Arc[]
Shou Hei Kun's next move was to make a faint attack against Soushuu in order to take a large Wei stronghold. The plan worked and the fort was captured by Yo Tan Wa Army. Later he receives the news from Kai Oku about Ka Rin becoming the prime minister of Chu. He is worried about this development and decides to put on hold his plans to make a surprise attack on Chu. Instead, he gives orders to Kan Ki Army and Hi Shin Unit to attack the Zhao region of Koku You.
Bureaucrats Job Arc[]
During the fraction meeting the court is worried that another coalition might be created. Shou Hei Kun assures everyone that it will not happen, since there's not a single person with enough reputation to lead a coalition and even if it did, he would not allow it to happen. However, in his thought, he notes that there is one more figure in the east who is a mystery, and he should increase their surveillance on the east. Ei Sei asks him who will they fight next and Shou Hei Kun answers that it's Zhao. After that the messenger runs into the court with a letter from Sai Taku.
Several days later Ri Boku and Ou Ken arrive in Kanyou. He is present during the meeting with prime minister Ri Boku. When Ri Boku asks Ei Sei to forget his dream of unification and instead try to make peace with alliance Shou Hei Kun stops his speech and says there is no other path but one through unification. The meeting turns into heated argument and Ri Boku says it will be Qin who will regret this development. Shou Hei Kun asks what he means by this and Ri Boku answers that since it's a battle of endurance Qin needs to crush Zhao as quickly as possible, but he will never allow this to happen and as Qin will use their strength to fight Zhao, Chu will use the opportunity to attack them. Shou Hei Kun says that if that's the case, they will kill him before this situation can occur. However, Ri Boku only laughs in his face and calls him a blind man, saying that even if he will unleash all of their generals it won't be enough.
Later Shou Hei Kun asks for a private meeting with Ei Sei. He says that with Ri Boku at the helm of Zhao's western defenses he has no idea how to conquer those lands, since Ri Boku begun the construction of elaborate web of defenses in western Zhao territory. Trying to conquer this would put a great strain on Qin's resources making the conquest impossible in the long run. Instead of going with orthodox approach he proposes to make a gamble and target an important city of Gyou that lies close to Zhao's capitol Kantan. He thinks that if they will be able to target Gyou then within next three years they should be capable of capturing entire Zhao.
Western Zhao Invasion Arc[]
Shou Hei Kun summons Mou Ten, Shin, Ka Ryo Ten, and Ou Hon to the High Command to discuss the plan of attack on Gyou. He tells them to make use of their experience and knowledge of the overall plan to make on the spot decisions. He appoints Kan Ki and Yo Tan Wa as Vice Generals and Ou Sen as Commander in Chief of the army at the ceremony. They watch the progress of the army. Ou Sen also asks him to involve Qi as a way to smuggle food into Gyou and he agrees.
War of the Three States Arc[]
Since Qin lacks the manpower to overcome Zhao Army Shou Hei Kun proposes to make an alliance with Wei. He makes a plan to make a mutual invasion of an important Chu city of Juuko and give it to Wei as a gift in order to buy 3 years of alliance. Go Hou Mei agrees and after the battle the alliance is established allowing Qin to move more soldiers north towards Zhao.
Battle of Eikyuu Arc[]
Shou Hei Kun attends the revival of Six Great Generals ceremony. He explains that the greatest advantage of the system is speed and through this they will be able to overcome enemy's recovery power. After they receive news of Kan Ki's victory against Ko Chou and later his massacre of the captured Zhao soldiers, he assigns Hyou Shiga, Black Cavalry Corps, and Kou Ryuu's unit to accompanied Ei Sei and his army to question Kan Ki and judge him for his actions.
Zhao's Retaliation Arc[]
After Qin revives their efforts to conquer Zhao, Shou Hei Kun receives the news from Ou Sen about Ri Boku's Great Wall and that he wants to attack Gian in order to cut royal family's escape. Shou Hei Kun agrees and devises a plan to send reinforcements from the north. However, it turns out Ri Boku predicts their way of attack and prepares countermeasures.
Nature Of Humanity Arc[]
Shou Hei Kun felt responsible for the failure of Gian's campaign, and spent several days holed up at home to think up the next strategy to redeem himself.
He summoned general Tou to be part of the delegation sent to Shintei, the Han capital. Following the failure of Zhao's conquest of the north, he plans to accelerate the unification plan elsewhere. This is why the diplomatic delegation to bring Kan Pishi back to Qin is used to make a preliminary survey of the Han capital.

Shou Hei Kun is stated to be one of the top military strategists in the world as Qin's Head of Military Affairs. His intellect considered to be on par with other top strategists like Ri Boku, Ka Rin, and the late Shun Shin Kun while also having a high level of martial valor. During the Rou Ai rebellion, he is able to defeat Wa Tegi's forces, despite having a massive disadvantage in numbers.
Physical Abilities[]
Immense Strength: Although a premier strategist, his strength is belied by his immense intellect and knowledge. In the one shot Meng Wu and Chu Zi, it is shown that he was stronger than Mou Bu as he was able to trade blows and knock down Mou Bu in a single blow in their youth. His martial ability was first demonstrated when he tore through enemy lines of the Ai armies while leading a charge at Siege of Kanyou.
Glaive Mastery: Shou Hei Kun shows a great proficiency with a glaive as he slew enemy soldiers with ease. He was able to easily slay Wa Tegi in a duel, where he disarmed and beheaded his opponent swiftly within two blows.[1]
Leadership[]
As the supreme commander of the entire Qin Military, Shou Hei Kun is a charismatic leader who commands great level of respect and trust from his subordinates and students. While leading his army from the front he was shown to keep the morale of the soldiers high and rally them with a speech.[2]
Tactical Abilities[]
Master Strategist: Shou Hei Kun is presented as one of the greatest strategical minds of his time. He is capable of creating plans for entire wars and campaigns. And has planned the total unification of China with Ei Sei. Ri Boku and Shun Shin Kun were the only two people in China that could see through Shou Hei Kun's invasion of Wei as a potentially checkmating move against the other states.[3]
Military Formations: Shou Hei Kun, having been taught by Ko Shou of the previous Six' Great Generals, is well versed with military formations as he instructed Mou Bu in the use of echelon formation and created a plan to divert their forces to the sides which enabled him to reach Kan Mei.[4] During the Ai rebellion, Shou Hei Kun used a tactical move, Hourai, that involves creating walls of soldiers to the left, right, and rear of the enemy commander, so as to entrap the enemy commander, Duke of Juuteki. This was later followed by a surgical strike straight down the center to take out the enemy's head which he succeeded.[5]
Politics[]
As the Chancellor of the Right, Shou Hei Kun is very knowledgeable in the art of diplomacy and governance. His style is to use diplomacy in order to isolate other countries and strike at them on one by one. After Ri Boku proposed the Qin/Zhao alliance, he used the opportunity to invade the key Wei region of Sanyou. During Coalition War he was able to weaken the coalition army by using Sai Taku to pay off the Qi king Ou Ken to separate his forces from the alliance. In 235 B.C. he made a three-year alliance with Wei which allowed Qin to move more soldiers on to the Zhao frontlines and progress their invasion.
