Ever since Ou Ki's death, Mou Bu's air has changed. The part of him that was sharp like a blade has settled down. But in exchange I can feel a fierce fighting spirit swirling deep within him. Right now, Qin's most terrifying general is without a doubt Mou Bu.

Shou Hei Kun on Mou Bu

Mou Bu is a Great General of the Qin Military and the first member of the Six Great Generals's second generation as well as the leader. He is the leader of the Mou Bu Army and the head of the Mou Family, the son of the late Great General Mou Gou and father of both Mou Ten and Mou Ki, and Shou Hei Kun's sworn/adoptive brother. He also a former member of the Four Pillars of Ryo Fui.

Appearance[]

Mou Bu is a tall, muscular man with spiked dark brown hair with a short goatee, his court attire is a dark jade green robe whereas he wears golden armor with a tied green cape in battle. He is noted by Shin to be even taller than the late General Ou Ki and is currently the tallest member of the Six Great Generals.

Personality[]

Mou Bu was initially, an arrogant and short-tempered man, not afraid to speak his mind in spite of consequences. He considers himself to be the strongest General in all of China. Accompanying this belief, he wished to re-establish the "Six Great Generals of Qin" with himself as one of their members. Because of his ambition and arrogance, he was contemptuous of Ou Ki, who was considered the strongest great general of Qin at the time, regarding him as no more than a relic of the past.

This arrogance would nearly cost Mou Bu his life during the Battle of Bayou which saw the death of Ou Ki, partially because of faulty judgment on his part, upon seeing Ou Ki's military might for himself, he became more aware of his own shortcomings and gain strong respect for the dying Ou Ki, even owning to his mistakes to the General in his final moments. This respect is further shown when he asked Shin about Ou Ki's Glaive in their encounter during the Sanyou Campaign and immediately asked for the right to wield it if Shin wasn't going to do in his lifetime.

By the time of the Coalition invasion of Qin, Mou Bu grew humbler and more respectful with his hostile air having simmered down with his fighting spirit growing to powerful heights. He acted less superior to Tou and treated the veteran bit more like an equal. Mou Bu's military behavior changed as well, having realized his mistakes when charging far too deep into enemy lines which Ou Ki warned him of and saw himself as the reason for Qin's previous defeat. He is not as reckless as he once was, but he still retains a dislike for using tactics. On the other hand, he is willing to use them, albeit begrudgingly, if it is absolutely necessary for him to win. Since Ou Ki was both an offensive and defensive general, it may be that Mou Bu was inspired by this and realized that being a purely brute force military commander was not the right way of becoming a truly great general.

History[]

Mou Bu and his father, Mou Gou originated from the State of Qi but because his father had never won a battle against the Zhao Commander Ren Pa, Mou Gou's military career hit a dead end. They left their homelands and the family wandered from state to state eventually ending up in the State of Qin where Mou Gou finally found success in the Qin Military and establish the Mou Family. In his youth Mou Bu befriended Shou Hei Kun, a former prince of Chu, and join the military himself at one point. The pair would also join the Ryo Fui Faction as two of Chancellor Ryo Fui's Four Pillars. Mou Bu showed himself to be more talented than his father as he shot through the ranks and eventually attained the rank of a General. He mostly met his wife during this period and have their first child Mou Ten together. Mou Bu placed Ko Zen, a vassal of the family, in charge of his upbringing and to be his guardian. Mou Bu and wife would have their second son, Mou Ki a few years later.

However, due to him being constantly at Ryo Fui's side, Mou Bu did not have ample opportunities to be on the frontlines. This resulted in his name not becoming very widespread to other states, but this did not stop his potential whose quality wasn't set in stone, as noted and observed by General Ou Ki.

Story[]

Assassination Plot Arc[]

Mou Bu first appears with the Ryo Fui Faction at the royal palace after the assassination attempt on Ei Sei, the king's life. He interrupts Ryo Fui to ask for an impromptu royal hearing and insults Ri Shi when he scolds the general for his breach of protocol. When he has everyone's attention, Mou Bu mentions his wish and expresses his desire to revive the "Six Great Generals" system which was used in the time of King Sho, the War God. He goes on further about the impact Qin had against its enemies because of the system and Sai Taku chastises him by talking about the problems that the state would face if they were to revive it now. Mou Bu declares himself to be the strongest in all of China and that he will prove his might to all, but the old man mentions that there isn't there someone stronger than him in the room, possibly in the whole state. Revealing that Ou Ki is the last surviving general of "Six Great Generals", Mou Bu states that his era is long gone, and he will pulverize him if he interferes. He asks the king to grant him the title of Great General and the ability to freely make war before he is silenced by Ryo Fui.

Battle of Bayou Arc[]

In response to the Han campaign, Zhao attacks the Qin city of Bayou, and this forces the king to call for an emergency conscription of 100,000 men to relieve the besieged city. Ryo Fui notes that it is fortunate that Mou Bu remained behind with all of Qin's generals occupied in Han and asks the king to appoint him Commander-in-Chief of the relief army. Shou Bun Kun objects to this angering Mou Bu, but he is halted by Shou Hei Kun who asks the opinion of Shou Bun Kun, who explains that Mou Bu leans more towards offense and has no defense. Shou Bun Kun proceeds by saying that the only one man available right now that has those qualities is Ou Ki, angering Mou Bu again. At that moment Ou Ki enters the room. He sizes up the Great General, telling him to piss off but Ou Ki states that he was summoned, and Shou Hei Kun confirms this as he was the one who did it for the same reasons Shou Bun Kun just explained. Mou Bu leaves the meeting after Ou Ki is selected as the Commander-in-chief, saying he won't recognize a relic of the past.

He is later appointed Vice General by Ou Ki and takes the vanguard in the army. Upon arriving at the besieged city of Bayou, he and 40,000 men make up the Qin army's center as the vanguard unit. He faces off against the heavy cavalry of the Ri Haku Army and decimates them with his charge, breaking through with his destructive strength alone. His offensive power during the battle is blunted by the tactics of Ri Haku who excels at defense. After the Zhao retreat, Mou Bu calls the Zhao general a joke when informed by his men of the day's events.

Mou Bu Attacks Ri Haku's Echelon

Mou Bu smashing through Ri Haku's defenses.

The next day, he leads the center army of 20,000 soldiers against Ri Haku and refuses assistance from General Kan Ou. His charge completely breaks through the Ri Haku Army's first line as he mocks the general for having been lucky to have mediocre opponents prior to meeting Mou Bu. He continues to fight despite being drawn into Ri Haku's Snake Formation but beats them back and after forcing the Zhao general to retreat. Seeing this, he orders his forces to destroy the remaining Zhao soldiers. Later on, he is invited to the Qin army headquarters by Ou Ki who gives him control over 5 armies so he can attack the Zhao headquarters in a single sweep. He uses them all the next day in a charge which forces the Zhao to move their headquarters deeper into the forest as they retreat.

Mou Bu arrives with his army at the relocated Zhao HQ and compliments Ryuu Koku on his navigation skills, asking him to come work for him. Ryuu Koku humbly declines and asks if they will proceed to encircle the Zhao with their combined army. Mou Bu states that there is no need as the Zhao have nowhere to run or hide then lead a charge towards their HQ with 25,000 troops. His army manages to push through despite the Zhao forces slowly sapping their strength and Mou Bu spots Hou Ken as he cuts down Qin troops. Upon seeing the Zhao commander-in-chief, he comments that it is his first time meeting a man with such a powerful "martial" aura and Hou Ken's gaze gives him the cold sweats, but he charges at him, nonetheless. Hou Ken retreats which angers Mou Bu, who follows him into a narrow canyon where the Zhao has set a trap for his cavalry. The trap reduces his forces by half but Mou Bu, despite advice, to withdraw, presses onwards as he has Houken in his sights. As his forces fight their way through an ambush set by Chou Sou, Mou Bu catches up to Hou Ken and bashes his skull open but realizes the dead man is a fake, telling his men to be on guard. As the battle went on, his men were reduced to less than a thousand, most of them exhausted from the prolonged fight against the Zhao troops until the arrival of Ou Ki's army gave them some hope. He and the remnants of his army watch the battle quietly before using their last reserves of strength to create an escape path for the dying Ou Ki. Seeing the dying Ou Ki, he apologizes for his rashness in the war and asks if the Qin great general has any parting words for him. Ou Ki tells him that he should know what his future tasks are, one of which is becoming a great symbol of Qin's military.

Alliance Arc[]

Mou Bu attended the meeting with Ri Boku and was armed in the royal palace. He showed his own displeasure at Ri Boku's suggestion of an alliance between Qin and Zhao and would leave the festival after drinking entire jug of alcohol with Chou Shi and Rai Ki.

Sanyou Campaign Arc[]

Mou Bu appears during the campaign and met Mou Ten and Shin while they were marching. He arrived to pass on a message and information concerning Ren Pa from Shou Hei Kun and high command. Upon telling his father of the information, he noticed that Mou Gou is disturbed by the news. He tells the story of his father's past with Ren Pa to his vassals Chou Shi and Rai Ki.

Coalition Invasion Arc[]

During the Battle of Kankoku Pass, Mou Bu is stationed, along with Tou, to the right of the pass, against the Kan Mei Army, Ka Rin Army, and Rin Bu Kun Army.

Mou Bu's army launched an attack against Chu Commander-in-Chief's personal army by using the trick the Chu into believing that Mou Bu was aiming for their right and left units, thus sending all reinforcements to their aid. By doing that, a clear path was formed in the middle of their forces, which Mou Bu and his personal unit of 5000 took full advantage of to reach straight to Kan Mei's HQ. His brute strength and were ut was sent to prevent Mou Bu from advancing, but they could not deal with his brute strength and were utterly defeated.

Kan Mei stood up to the challenge and entered the battle himself. His clash with Mou Bu was one of incredible force, but the Qin general seemed to be overwhelmed by Kan Mei's immense strength. But then Mou Bu laughed, saying he is happier than ever since he could finally fight a strong opponent. The 2 engaged in battle and were almost equal in everything until Kan Mei shattered Mou Bu's wrist, the bone piercing through the skin. Mou Bu nearly passed out but remembered why he was fighting and returned the favor, crushing Kan Mei's mace with full power, forcing a shard of his bone to pierce out his elbow. They had yet another clash that shattered Kan Mei's mace. In the background, Ka Rin had sent her younger brother Ka En to kill Mou Bu during the duel, and he would have succeeded if not for Mou Ten, who intercepted the assassin but was knocked in between Kan Mei and Mou Bu. The former, enraged at the interruption, instantly cut him and his horse down. Seeing his son cut down in front of his eyes, Mou Bu snapped and bashed in part of Kan Mei's head. In disbelief, Kan Mei could only watch as Mou Bu swung again, felling and turning the Giant of Chu into pulp.

Mou Bu was then asked by the Gaku Ka's men to say some final words to his fallen son, but he refused, saying Mou Ten would not die because he was the son of Mou Bu!!. Still in a fit of rage Mou Bu, along with his soldiers, would go on to massacre the remnants of the Kan Mei Army completely changing tides of the war.

Days later when the coalition forces finally retreated from Qin, Mou Bu would lead his army to attack the retreating army from the rear which forced the Coalition to disband. Weeks later at the rewards ceremony, Mou Bu was honored as the General with the highest achievements from the war. His Nobility rank was raised by two, he was given the lands of Ryuujin and Shunjin along with 3000 units of gold and 10 units of treasure.

Kyou Kai's Revenge Arc[]

Sometime later, Mou Bu receives the news of his father Mou Gou's pending death on the frontlines of the Qin/Wei border. However, he is unable to leave the front. When he receives the final word of his father's passing, he asks his men that he wishes to be left alone with some liquor to drink. He then reminisced on his childhood with his father and their travels together throughout China trying to find a place to flourish. He lifts a toast to his father while stating it was a really long journey.

State of Ai Arc[]

Mou Bu is tasked by Shou Hei Kun to defend their borders on Gento from Chu's invasion forces led by Ka Rin and her own army. He, alongside Roku O Mi, Ou Hon, and his son Mou Ten defended the land as he buried over thousands of Ka Rin's soldiers.

Western Zhao Invasion Arc[]

Mou Bu is mentioned by Ri Boku during his meeting the king of Qin, Ei Sei. At the time of the campaign, he was in the Qin/Chu border, where Ka Rin Army also stationed, going to fight him if the campaign failed.

War of the Three States Arc[]

Mou Bu tasked to conquer the city of Juuko, long desired by neighboring states but failed to conquer as it's guarded by the Juuko Army led by Man'U. Upon the arrival of Gecchi Plains with he led an army of 30,000 soldiers. Despite the protests of his aide and Mou Ki that it was suicidal to attack against the Juuko Army that numbered 80,000 soldiers against Qin of 30,000, in addition to 'no answers' coming from the Wei whether or not they accept the three-year alliance. Knowing fully, Mou Bu goes to engaged against the Man'U Army who has given Mou Bu and his soldiers a stalemate. As Mou Bu leads the charge on the frontline, he catches Man'U's interest who wish to duel with him as soon as he's done warming up. Despite reinforcements from the Tou Army numbering 20,000 led by Tou and Roku O Mi to assist Mou Bu's army. They are still at a disadvantage and even more so when other forces from the Chu came to assist the Juuko with the Haku Rei Army and Kou Yoku Army.

The Qin army, heavily outnumbered and placed in a dire situation, attempted to retreat until the unexpected arrival of a Wei army numbering 70,000 that come as allies of Qin. With the recent turn of events. Ju Ko'Ou has Juuko's army and the reinforcement to withdraw and take up positions in a way they face both enemies at one side to another.

The Battle at Gecchi Plains, with Qin/Wei alliance of 120,000 vs Chu forces 110,000, begins with the former gaining the upper ground. Mou Bu and Tou, despite not having a proper strategist that could compete with Wei's army under Go Hou Mei's leadership. Make up for it with their respective strengths. Allowing them to push through the Chu's ranks. Mou Bu's soldiers faced Man U's army once again. This time, Mou Bu finally mets Man'U face to face after the former had to break through Man'U's elite army and honored bodyguards with difficulty. Man'U states how Mou Bu reminded him and the rest of the fellow generals of Juuko Army of who they used to be until they lost everything or find it meaningless. In the first exchange between the two giants, Man'U knocked down Mou Bu from his horse with a single strike using only one arm. As the duel continues, Man'U overwhelms Mou Bu and every one of his strikes is heavier, despite this, Mou Bu fights on and exchanges blows with Man'U, catching him off guard.

In the midst of the fierce duel between them, Man'U stated that he believes himself weaker than the late Kan Mei and that the reason why Mou Bu won against Kan Mei was purely due to the fact the Qin Great General carried something Man'U that called a "heavy burden" on his shoulder. Something that gave Mou Bu an immense strength to keep going. Their duel was interrupted with the capture of Chu HQ by the Tou Army. Seeing this, Gen'U ordered a full retreat. Leaving the duel to a halt. Much to Mou Bu's anger. With Chu's army retreat and capture of Juuko City. It marks a crushing victory for the Qin/Wei alliance army. When Chu HQ was captured, Tou kept Ju Ko Ou as a prisoner who wishes to see Mou Bu so he could tell the Qin army the story behind the Juuko army and the tragedy history of his opponent, Man'U. Upon hearing the story and the true character of both the commanders of Juuko Army and Man'U. Mou Bu simply stood silent, knowing that the two will eventually clash with each other again if given a chance. Later on, he, and the rest of the Qin Generals and commanders met up with Wei's officers at Juuko's city walls. But he shortly left deciding not to get involve with the Wei echelon as there's no point in being friendly as it's only a 'temporary' alliance.

Battle of Eikyuu Arc[]

Mou Bu is present in Kanyou during the ceremony of reviving Six Great Generals. He is given the position of the First Great among the new Qin Six.

Mou Bu is a great general who was said to possess a talent for warfare on par with Six Great Generals, eventually becoming the leader of the new generation.[1][2] He has been called the "Unrivaled Strongest Man in Qin" because of his brute force approach to warfare, employing direct cavalry charges and melee to overpower his enemies. Even before the Battle of Bayou, Shou Bun Kun considered Mou Bu's offense to be the best in Qin.[3] His son Mou Ten later stated that as far as offensive might goes, Mou Bu can already be considered the greatest in Qin's history.[4] During the Coalition War, Shou Hei Kun even called him the most terrifying general in all of Qin.[5]

Physical Abilities[]

Moubu-destroys-kyoubou

Mou Bu's rampage.

Mace Mastery: Mou Bu is a powerful warrior, and his weapon of choice displays his brute strength on the battlefield perfectly. His massive club can easily smash through armored cavalry, and he can also wield it with one hand. According to Ou Ki, Mou Bu's natural talent as a warrior could well be a match for any of the previous members of the Six Great Generals.[6] He clashed equivalently with Kan Mei, the Giant of Chu, whose colossal strength could easily decimate entire battalions and ultimately surpassed him during their duel.

Immense Strength: It has been inferred that Mou Bu's physical strength surpass any other great general in China in terms of pure raw power. His talent lies in one extreme, undistilled prowess as his might is such that each swing can decide the tide of a battle.[7] With physical power alone, he managed to repel Ri Haku's Snake Formation despite being completely encircled. The late General Ou Ki commented that such a feat does not exist in tactics, which would greatly disturb anyone heavily versed in tactics and strategists.[8]He was capable of breaking through the Kyoubou Great Cavalry Corps which was exclusively made out of warriors as large as him.[9] He is even considered more powerful than the late Ou Kotsu who was the strongest in brute strength out of the previous Six Great Generals.[10]

Leadership[]

Mou Bu possesses amazing ability in raising morale. While leading from the front he can greatly boost the confidence of his soldiers as seen when he made an army of untrained hastily brought together peasants overpower professional Zhao soldiers. During the Battle of Kankoku Pass with a simple speech, he caused in his army the explosion of morale that greatly enhanced the fighting spirit of every soldier present, to the point that blood busted from their eyes.[11]

Tactical Abilities[]

Expert Strategist: Mou Bu is noted to have a very good understanding of warfare despite his brutish nature and preference in head on clashes.[12] During the Battle of Bayou, he decided not to break Ri Haku's formations on the first day in order to reduce the number of casualties and gauge the Zhao General. Most of the infantry soldiers in the army were conscripted in an emergency draft and due to this their morale was at an all-time low. To prepare his put together soldiers made from commoners and peasants, he gave them a new source of confidence and restrained himself from penetrating deep into the Zhao's formation until the next day.[13]

Since Ou Ki's death, Tou remarked that Mou Bu had become stronger and was shown to have become more patient in the handling of his army from a distance during the Battle of Kankoku Pass.

Military Formations: Mou Bu is capable to perform military formations despite his conflicting preferences. He was able to execute the Echelon Formation, a high-level attack strategy that was considered impractical by most trained strategists and tacticians without any outside help from advisors.

Weaknesses[]

It should be noted that Mou Bu's weakness is in his inability to employ defensive strategies in tandem with or to match his fierceness during combat. This was heavily exploited during Chou Sou's trap that nearly annihilated him and his army.

Trivia[]

  • Mou Bu is based on a real historical general,Meng Wu.
  • Mou Bu has an extremely loud voice.
